Internships

An internship is a short-term experience that allows students to apply classroom knowledge in a professional setting while gaining practical skills, career insight, and relevant experience.

These opportunities may include internships, co-ops, student teaching, clinical experiences, practicums, field experiences, service-learning, apprenticeships, and other work-based learning experiences.

Nationally, about 60% of internships are paid, while 40% are unpaid. Whether an internship is paid often depends on the industry, employer, and type of experience.

The most common time to complete an internship is during your junior or senior year, but students can intern at any point in their college experience. The right time depends on your goals, experience, academic requirements, and the opportunities available.

When an internship appears on your official transcript, it signals to future employers, graduate programs, and scholarship committees that you didn’t just attend classes. You instead applied what you learned in a workplace setting and earned academic recognition for it. It can make your experience easier to verify, stand out more clearly alongside your coursework, and help you tell a stronger story about your skills, professionalism, and career readiness when you apply for future opportunities. 

If you are taking a for-credit internship course, it may also progress you towards degree completion.

With the zero-credit internship course, you get all of the benefits of an internship course on your transcript but at no additional cost. With a for-credit internship course, you pay tuition. For the zero-credit internship course, you do not.
