TXST Recruiting Guidelines

We work for the benefit of Texas State University
students and alumni.


Career Services at Texas State aims to prepare, inspire and empower TXST students for career success. Employer engagement is an important component for students in their career development and we view employers as our partners.

TXST Career Services strives to foster an equitable recruiting environment for all members of the TXST community including students, alumni, and employers. We encourage organizations and their recruiters to help us create a successful recruiting program by acting in agreement with the following guidelines.

Employers who recruit, post jobs, and visit campus must adhere to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) guidelines, University-wide guidelines, and the NACE Principles for Ethical Practice.

  • While we evaluate employers as much as possible to ensure they are legitimate and do not exploit our students when employing them, we do not always agree with the mission, vision, values, and/or practices of employers that recruit on our campus. When students and graduates report specific instances of behavior, situations, and/or practices that seem contrary to our mission and/or TXST values, we will listen to that person’s perspective, and when appropriate, address those concerns directly with an employer representative. If we determine an employer is acting contrarily to our guiding mission and principles, we may take action which could include barring a specific representative from our campus and/or barring an entire organization from engaging in Career Services events and programs.
    TXST students’ values, interests, and perspectives are as varied as those of our employers. While our values direct our work, we believe it is important to welcome all employers that meet our standards and policies to recruit on our campus.

    The University reserves the right to withhold approval to recruit on campus from any businesses, or organizations whose stated aim and objectives are deemed by the University to contradict this philosophy or the mission of the institution.  These factors could include:

    • Misrepresentation by dishonest information or absence of information
    • Fraud
    • Complaints by students, alumni, faculty and/or staff
    • Harassment of TXST students, alumni, and/or staff
    • Breach of confidentiality
  • For a smooth approval of your Handshake account, employers must:

    • Complete all required sections.
    • Provide detailed information to help students learn about your organization
    • Provide a professional website and matching contact domain email address (e.g., no personal, Gmail, or Yahoo accounts allowed).
    • Represent a recognized business with a business location and address. Personal requests/postings are prohibited.

    Employer accounts may be declined for the following reasons:

    • Home-based Businesses
    • Marijuana/Cannabis Industries:
      • TXST will not accept positions related to the use or distribution of recreational or medical marijuana. As the use of marijuana is illegal at the federal level and TXST receives federal funds, we must comply with federal law.
    • Personal requests and postings are prohibited (such as nanny or in-home care not associated with a licensed organization)
    • Company location or size is not relevant to our student population
    • Companies relating to:
      • Firearms
      • Gambling
      • MLM to purchase products in order to sell
      • EEO violations (such as religious or identity discrimination)
    • Campus Brand Ambassador/Student Representative:  Positions requiring interns or employees to market/promote or create/develop free or fee-based programs, products, services, events, etc. and/or collect student information on the TXST campus on behalf of an employer are ineligible. Examples include campus brand ambassadors and student referrals of other students.
    • Project Based Work:  Positions that are short-term or based on completion of a project only
    • The posted job must not overstate possible compensation
    • The posted job must offer employment and not an investment opportunity
    • The posted job preferred email address should be reflective of the company and not a personal email (Gmail/Yahoo/Hotmail or other)
    • Position does not have a complete or clear job description and job title
    • Recruiters representing organizations with a multi-level marketing structure, charge “sign-on” fees, or require the purchase of a “starter kit” are not permitted to post jobs or participate in on-campus recruiting events
    • Employers with “straight commission” positions may post jobs, participate in on-campus recruiting, and attend our job fairs. The term “straight commission” must be clearly stated in the job posting so that students are aware and can decide whether they are interested in the opportunity
    • The posting was to promote a graduate or advanced degree program
    • The internship must provide supervision for students on a regular basis
    • The internship must provide meaningful exposure to a college level degree
    • The company must be located in a commercial/business setting and not in a private residence or home office
    • Virtual internships may be approved on a case-by-case basis
    • The position must not be strictly commission-based
    • If the positions’ location and timeframe may not be feasible for our student population, the position may be declined
    • Unpaid internships are allowed but must pass the Department of Labor’s “primary beneficiary” test. Unpaid internships that require students to pay out-of-pocket expenses are prohibited; examples include unpaid internships requiring students to pay for gas to run internship-related errands, purchase software, or provide their own equipment and facilities.
  • A Third-Party/Staffing Agency must complete a TPSA Statement of Understanding form along with your Handshake account prior to consideration for approval.

    Third-Party event registration is limited and at the discretion of the Employer Engagement Team.

    • Scheduling: Reservations must be submitted via Handshake at least 5 business days in advance of the date requested.
    • Employers participating in on-campus interviews must submit interview schedules to Career Services
    • Cancellations: Employers who utilize on-campus interview rooms must give sufficient notice (minimum of 48-hours) in the event of a schedule cancellation. The recruiter will be advised to contact each student directly to make arrangement for another interview date/time. The recruiter is also asked to share follow-up information with Career Services.
  • ‘Exploding offers’ will not be tolerated and will affect your ability to recruit at TXST in the future.

  • TXST Career Services reserves the right to make exceptions to these policies and guidelines as warranted by special circumstances, for example if certain situations deemed to be acceptable and beneficial to our students, the University, or recruiters using our services. Such exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Any exception made does not constitute a change in policy, nor is there a guarantee that this same decision will apply in the future.
